Clinical Neuroscience Group (CNG), Ahus

Our overall goal is to establish early diagnostics and intervention for diseases that affect the nervous system.

We facilitate, initiate, coordinate and carry out clinical research aimed at disease mechanisms with a focus on early diagnostics and intervention, including studies to bring forward new drugs and treatment principles. This applies to clinical studies, intervention studies and translational studies.

About the group

The Clinical Neuroscience Group (CNG) is the research and development (R&D) unit at the department of Neurology, Ahus. CNG is organized in 4 research groups:

  • Cognitive impairment and dementia, headed by Professor Tormod Fladby
  • Cerebrovascular diseases, headed by Professor Ole Morten Rønning
  • Multiple sclerosis and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, headed by Professor Trygve Holmøy
  • Headache, headed by Kjersti Grøtta Vetvik

CNG has an infrastructure for standardized diagnostic and clinical procedures, as well as quantitative and semi-quantitative algorithms for clinical evaluation of patients.

Clinical and biological test results are stored in separate biobanks available for ongoing and future projects.

Regional, national and international networking between clinicians, researchers and academic centers with free capacities and collaborative projects is encouraged, as well as collaboration with biotechnology companies and the pharmaceutical industry on projects within our focus areas.

The Neuroclinic has approx. 25,000 patient consultations a year. Patient-oriented research is a high priority for CNG, and is facilitated by the department and its large catchment area, which ensures the recruitment of patients for research projects.

The projects combine clinic, neuropsychology, diagnostic imaging and genetic/proteomic analyzes in spinal fluid/blood in order to eventually establish methods for early diagnostics and early intervention.

The project groups are made up of an interdisciplinary team consisting of nurses, doctors, neuropsychologists, and staff with molecular biology, bioinformatics and neurochemical expertise. All have expertise at professor, post-doc and Ph D level.
