Sune Dueholm Müller is a professor at the University of Oslo and a leading researcher in information systems. For years, he studied the intersection between information systems and healthcare. He is involved in many different projects that investigate socio-technical aspects of health information systems development and use in different organizational contexts.

"Climate variability or climate change really have negative impacts on countries in the global south. I want to dedicate a substantial part of my research time to help address those problems."

Discover key takeaways from the Centre for Pandemics and One-Health Research (P1H) annual conference at UiO. Over two days, experts across ecology, medicine, law, and governance explored multidisciplinary strategies to strengthen global pandemic preparedness.

We talked with researcher Hanne Amanda Trangerud about her PhD dissertation: «To Use or Refuse? A Study of Religious Vaccine Skepticism and its Interaction with Childhood Immunization Policies in the United States» from the Faculty of Humanities.

"My four American case studies showed how parents still use litigation, among other measures, to secure the right to refuse vaccinating their children, and that religious objections cannot always be separated from secular arguments."

On 18 March, the student representatives for the Centre for Pandemics and One-Health Research organized a panel discussion with Usman Ahmad Mushtaq (Labour Party), the State Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Care Services, and Erlend Svardal Bøe (Conservative Party), a member of the Health and Care Committee in Parliament, moderated by the center leader Gunnveig Grødeland.

Prof. Nils Chr. Stenseth's work looks at plague from a perspective other than just public health, finding links between climate variation in Central Asia and disease outbreaks in Europe.

“It is important to emphasise that we are not only focused on threats when you ask what motivates this work. As a society, we are facing pressing challenges and know that we need to achieve radical change, but the present moment is also an opportunity and human-animal-environment interconnection can be harnessed in service to health, equity, and sustainability.”

With Christina Brux, senior advisor at the Sustainable Health Unit (SUSTAINIT), University of Oslo. By applying knowledge from her One Health research and career in the social sciences, she gives an insight into the research happening at the Sustainable Health Unit at UiO and a perspective on pandemics and One-Health.

“We are using up all these resources, and we are killing all the species. We need to find other, more sustainable ways of living. This applies not only in the global north but also in the global south. To me, it seems like there is no other sort of question as important as that right now.”

“Our idea with this project was to re-think the concept of translation by empirically investigating what actually happens when global directives enter local antibiotic practices.”

With their research project "From resistance to friction: promoting action on antimicrobial resistance through analysis of complex global-local connections” - Carolina Rau and Ida Lillehagen from SUSTAINIT- Sustainable Health Unit, explore ways to develop new frameworks for action on antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

“Having real-world evidence on the safety and effectiveness of vaccines and medications is important as it forms the foundation for good public health decisions — not just in Norway, but globally.”

Hedvig Nordeng is a professor at the University of Oslo and a leading researcher in perinatal pharmacoepidemiology. For years, she has studied how use of medications during pregnancy and breastfeeding may affect both mother and child. Throughout several research project, she investigates the impact of COVID-19 and related treatments on pregnant women and their babies, using Norwegian health data in collaboration with partners from multiple European countries.

“Primary care is the sector where we use about 90% of all antibiotics in Norway. If we want to use antibiotics more responsibly, then primary care is the main area to focus on.”

Antibiotic resistance is one of today’s biggest health challenges. A research project on audit and feedback (A&F) explores how doctors can gain better insight into their antibiotic prescribing and receive guidance on best practices.

Sigurd Høye is a general practitioner, head of the Norwegian Centre for Antibiotic Use in Primary Care, and a researcher focused on responsible antibiotic use. Through international collaboration, he develops strategies for safer and more effective treatment in primary care.

“In this COVID study with adolescents, we found that approximately 47 percent had long-term sequels, and quite a high percentage of these would fulfil the criteria for chronic fatigue syndrome, which is a debilitating situation.”

With his research project "LoTECA - Long-term effects of COVID-19 in adolescents", Vegard Bruun Bratholm Wyller from the Faculty of Medicine explores the long-term effects of COVID-19 in non-hospitalised adolescents and young adults.

“The main aim is centered on digital innovation during a crisis. How can we efficiently innovate during a crisis?”

With her PhD project “Liminal Digital Innovation: Understanding digital innovation during a crisis” Ragnhild Bassøe Gundersen from the Department of Informatics explores digital innovation, especially during a crisis.

“We know the basics and general principles of how the immune system works, but there's so many intricate details that we don't know”.

With his PhD project "Exploring the Field of Respiratory Virus Preventions - How to Deal with Future Pandemics", Elias Tjärnhage from the Faculty of Medicine explores immunological responses to viruses and how to create better vaccines.

“The international cooperation climate has been, and is still, challenged by the way rich countries hoarded vaccines during the pandemic”

With his PhD thesis "The rise of public-private partnerships as agents of global governance. The case of pandemic preparedness and response", Antoine de Bengy Puyvallée from the Centre for Development and the Environment explores the global cooperation to fight pandemics. How can we make cooperation work better for many people?

For the first time, the four health faculties from the main universities of Norway, University of Oslo, University of Bergen, NTNU, and University of Tromsø, together with the Norwegian Armed Forces and the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, assembled to discuss strategies for handling of future crisis, including new pandemics and war.

With his research project “EquityAMR”, Professor Sundeep Sahay from the Department of Informatics explores AMR as it is one of the biggest threats we are facing in global health. Through his research project he aims to build a more multidisciplinary view on AMR and strengthen public health systems.

“Trust is really the glue of society. It is what binds us together.”

With his research project ‘Pandemic Rhetoric’, Professor Øyvind Ihlen from the Department of Media and Communication explores understanding on how trust is built during a pandemic outbreak. In his research he aims to understand the processes and negotiations that are taking place regarding risk and trust as well as to understand how public health authorities are communicating throughout a crisis.

“We know even less about the immune system as compared to the virus, so clearly, that is where my focus should be”.

Gunnveig Grødeland, head of P1H, explores the understanding of the interaction between a virus and a host. Furthermore, she works on the use of vaccination to modulate immune responses to achieve optimal protection against new and emerging viruses. 

We have almost managed to forget the corona pandemic and all that it entailed, but we remember that good vaccines were quickly made. Can we expect the same next time?
