Doctoral dinner
Some candidates wish to mark the defence with a dinner or other social gathering after the defence has been completed. This social event is often referred to as a doctoral dinner. The event is private, and it is optional whether you want to organize it or not. The event can be formal or informal – it is up to you.

Expenses
You must cover the expenses for the dinner yourself. A doctoral dinner after public defence is a private event organized by the candidate. The faculty has no expectations as to whether a doctoral dinner is held or not, or whether opponents, committee chair or chair of the defence participate in the event.
It is no longer possible to claim tax deductions for expenses, including expenses for the doctoral dinner, in connection with a doctorate. This change is effective from the 2023 tax year. Please refer to the Norwegian Tax Administration's website for more information.
Doctoral conferment
After the faculty has approved the doctoral examination, you will be conferred the degree of Doctor by the rector. This is celebrated with a ceremony in the University Aula.
Ceremonial diploma
During the conferral ceremony, you will receive a ceremonial diploma in Latin, issued by the University of Oslo. If you do not attend the doctoral conferment, the ceremonial diploma will be sent to you by post.
Diploma and diploma supplement
The diploma and diploma supplement are issued by the faculty.

The name you are registered with in Studentweb will appear on the ceremonial diploma, diploma and diploma supplement. The ceremonial diploma, diploma and diploma supplement are issued only once. You can apply for a duplicate if the diploma and/or diploma supplement are lost.
