Negotiating payments: A qualitative study on the hospitals’ handling of irregular migrants in the Oslo Metropolitan Area

Irregular migrants referred to the hospital for specialist care are experiencing an arbitrary billing practice. Some get a bill for the total cost of the treatment, others just an individual share, and some does not get an invoice at all. Oslo University Hospital, Akershus University Hospital and the Health Centre for Undocumented Migrants in Oslo have taken the initiative for this master thesis to investigate the practice of billing. The study is based on the following research question: What are the barriers to equal and predictable treatment of irregular migrants in the hospitals in the Oslo Metropolitan Area? The study consists of three parts, with three different aims: 1) Mapping the practices and processes when dealing with irregular migrants in the hospitals, focusing on registering and billing. 2) In-depth interviews with healthcare professionals to explore their challenges and appraisals with this patient group. 3) In-depth interviews with 5-10 irregular migrants that have received treatment at the hospital and explore their experience with the issue of payment.

A qualitative study on the psychosocial services offered at the Health Center for Undocumented Migrants

This master´s project aims to develop new knowledge on how organized activities at the Health Centre for Undocumented Migrants in Oslo can enhance the psychosocial health of irregular migrants. The study explores irregular migrant’s perceptions, needs, motivations and engagement of organized, psychosocial group activities through qualitative methods such as observations, semi-structured and un-structured interviews. Previous experiences from the Health Centre’s mental health project (2011-2014, funded by Extrastiftelsen) suggest that psychosocial group activities have the potential to give a sense of meaning and structure in the everyday lives of irregular migrants. The goal of the study is to gain knowledge that can be used by the Health Centre to expand and increase the quality of the psychosocial services they are providing.
