Factors influencing sexual risk taking among young gay men in Norway
Objectives: The study aims to increase knowledge about young gay men in Norway, their vulnerability to, and their coping strategies towards, HIV infection. This presentation focuses on associations between general cultural traits, specially significant sexual encounters, and the risk of practising unsafe sex.
Design: Qualitative in-depth study of theoretically chosen sample of young gay men.
Methods: Repeated in-depth interviews were carried out with twenty 17-22 year-old self identified gay men. 81 interviews were conducted in total over a 27 month period. Data was complemented by findings from seven focus group discussions with other young gay men and older¿ gay men, and from key informant interviews.
Results: In Norway, the general cultural norm of reciprocity governs young gay men's sexual interaction. For a substantial group of young gay men, being in a relationship, or participating in an sexual encounter which evokes feelings of debt and obligation can lead to risk taking. For example, if a partner receives semen in his mouth, the young man feel obliged to do so likewise.
In a sexual encounter of special significance, the young man may temporarily subordinate his desire to practise safer sex. For example, if the encounter provides an long desired opportunity to live out a sexual fantasy.
Conclusion: General cultural traits influencing unsafe sex between men in Norway should be further explored. There is also a need to identify types of sexual encounters which, for the individual, may involve risk taking. Young gay men should be provided with more opportunities to reflect upon and identify situations or relations which, for them, might involve practising unsafe sex.
