Dietary Research

What we eat matters for the health of both people and the planet.

We aim to identify dietary challenges in the Norwegian population as well as environmental sustainability challenges in the Norwegian food pattern.

In the last 20 years the research group has developed and validated several dietary assessment instruments.

The instruments are used in large population groups of different age and among patients with disease-related malnutrition to identify nutritional challenges.

We conduct intervention studies to explore how we can change eating behaviors related to known challenges. Examples of this are how can we get children to eat more vegetables, and how can we reduce disease-related malnutrition in patients.

A relatively new research area within the group is what is a healthy and environmental sustainable diet based on Norwegian dietary patterns, culture and food production.

About the group

The research focus is on:

  • Development and evaluation of dietary assessment methods, biological markers, food composition database and software systems to facilitate data collection and analysis.
  • Development and evaluation of an electronic decision-making tool to prevent and treat disease-related malnutrition.
  • Patterns of energy, food and nutrient intake, eating and meal patterns among Norwegian infants, toddlers, preschoolers, schoolchildren and adults to understand these patterns in relation to age, gender, educational level, smoking, body weight etc.

  • How food environment (eg. home, kindergarten and school environment) influences weight development and eating patterns among children/adolescents.

  • Compilation of environmental data on foods and establishment of food-based dietary guidelines for different age groups that consider health, nutritional adequacy and sustainability.
