Samfunnsmedisin inkluderer kunnskap om hvordan sosiale, økonomiske og kulturelle forhold påvirker befolkningens helsestatus, og om ulike helseoppfatninger. Kunnskap om forebyggende og helsefremmende tiltak på ulike nivåer i samfunnet er en del av faget.
