Bakgrunn

Ruth Prince er utdannet sosialantropolog ved universitetene i København, UCL og Oxford. Hennes forskningsfelt er på Øst-Afrika.

Ruth Prince er en av seks forskere i Norge som får årets (2017) tildeling av prestisjetunge ERC Starting Grant. Prosjektet er en antropologisk studie av hvordan "Universal Health Coverage" betyr for staten og statsborgerskapet i tre Afrikansk lander. Prosjektet mottatt finansiering fra ERC panelet for samfunnsvitenskap og humaniora SH5 som mottatt finansiering fra panelet for samfunnsvitenskap og humaniora (SH5).

Nyere forskning inkluderer:

1) "Engasjement og løsrivelse: En etnografisk studie av moralske dilemmaer rundt omsorg i et offentlig sykehus".

Et nylig avsluttet forskningsprosjekt gjennomført i Kenya, med fokus på omsorg, slektskap og medisinsk praksis, og de moralske og etiske dilemmaene som medisinske fagfolk står overfor, men også familier når de søker omsorg for sine kjære. Denne forskningen bidrar til den etnografiske forståelsen av biomedisin i postkolonialt Afrika, og gjør oppmerksom på de etiske og moralske dilemmaene som utgjør medisin i 'ressursfattige' områder. Forskningen utforsket rundt omsorg på et offentlig sykehus i sammenheng med innstramminger, økende sosioøkonomisk ulikhet, kronisk sykdom og utvidelse av lukrative medisinske markeder. (Norsk forskningsråd, FRISAM-stipend, 2013-2017).

2) "Kreft og kronisk sykdom: pleie og beskyttelse". Forskning fokuserte på nettverk av omsorg rundt kreft- og diabetespasienter i Kenya, inkludert globale nettverk, da middelklassekyanere søker behandling i India. (Flyktninghjelpen FRISAM, 2013-2017).

3) "Utviklingsmodernisme i den østafrikanske byen: Sovjetisk medisinsk hjelp til Kenya og dets etterliv i minnene fra leger som er opplært i Sovjetunionen". Forskning utforsket arv fra den kalde krigen i Kenya, og tegnet på muntlige historier om kenyanske leger utdannet i Sovjetunionen.

4) “Frivillige økonomier: Urban ungdom, prekaritet og den østafrikanske byen”; Wellcome Trust samarbeidspilotilskudd om “Gatenivå helsearbeidere i afrikanske byer” (2011-12).

5) “Humanitære intervensjoner og moralske omsorgsøkonomier”: Dette prosjektet fokuserte på urbane Kenya, og utforsket former for krav som tar form rundt humanitære og transnasjonale inngrep i helse. (Mellon Foundation, Smuts-fondet, University of Cambridge, og Max Planck institute for Social Anthropology) (2008-2011).

Prosjektet utforsket moralske holdninger, nye identiteter og former for krav som dukker opp rundt utvidelsen av antiretrovirale legemidler som kan bremse utviklingen av HIV-virus i blodet. Forskningen ble utført ved HIV-klinikker i Vest-Kenya med fokus på den kenyanske byen Kisumu. Ruth Prince har skrevet om hvordan dette humanitære bistandsarbeidet, med fokus på tilgang til medisin, avslører spørsmål om sult, matsikkerhet, fattigdom og liv i afrikanske byer.

Ruth Prince har også forsket på kristendommen; sykdom og helbredelse i tillegg til død og rituell praksis. Tidligere publikasjoner gir en historisk etnografisk forståelse av kristendom, materiell praksis, hukommelse og kjønnsrelasjoner i Vest-Kenya i løpet av et århundre fra kolonitiden.

Monografien Ruth Prince publiserte  sammen med Wenzel Geissler, The Land is Dying: Contingency, Creativity and Conflict in Western Kenya, ble tildelt  Royal Anthropological Institute’s 2010 Amuary Talbot Prize.
