Faglige interesser

Christoph Gradmanns fokuserer hovedsaklig på den smittsomme sykdommens historie innenfor moderne tider (1800-tallet til nåtid). Han startet med kultur- og vitenskapshistorien til den tyske medisinske bakteriologien i slutten av 1800-tallet og skrev bl.a. en biografi til den tyske legen Robert Koch (1843-1910). Nylig har han utvidet sitt fokus til å inkludere hva som skjedde med smittsomme sykdommene da de kom tilbake på slutten av 1900-tallet. Stikkordene er antibiotikaresistens, nosokomiale infeksjoner, emerging infections osv. Nylig har han begynt å forske om den gobale helsens historie med særlig fokus på samtidshistorien til multiresistent tuberkulose.

Christoph Gradmann er interessert i standardiseringen av biologiske stoffer/legemidler fra ca. 1850. Denne forskningen begynte med en historie om tuberkulin, men har blitt utvidet til å forstå interaksjonen mellom biologi og teknologi, som kjennetegner den moderne tid.

Christoph Gradmann er interessert i historiografiske spørsmål og spesielt i teori og historie til biografier som et sjangre av historisk litteratur. Han har publisert artikler, vært utgiver til biografiske leksika og har skrevet en bok biografienes historie i mellomkrigstiden.

Bakgrunn

Christoph Gradmann har studert historie og litteraturvitenskap i Hannover (tyskland) og Birmingham (UK). Han tok M.A. i 1987 og Dr.phil. i 1991. Han ble kvalifisert til å bli professor i Heidelberg i 2002 igjennom å avlegge en såkalt ”Habilitation” i medisin- og vitenskapshistorie.

Christoph Gradmann har et bred spektrum av kooperasjonspartnere i inn- og utlandet. Sammen med Christian Bonah (Strassbourg), Jean Paul Gaudelliére (Paris) og Volker Hess (Berlin) har an initiert ESF’s forskingsnettverket DRUGS som fra 2008 - 2013 ble drevet med samarbeidpartnere i ni europeiske land.
